Last week my sister decided to forgo jello shots in Padre and spend her spring break changing diapers in Chicago. An obvious choice. Since my birthday is coming up, she gave me my gift early. She made dinner reservations for me and Michael one night while she was here and offered herself up as a babysitter. Not only that, but she paid for the dinner so she gets total bonus points. Not to mention that this was while Miles was in full-on acid reflux constant crying mode. Serious sparkly bonus points. Michael and I hadn't been able to get out of the house and go to dinner together (just the two of us) since Miles made his first appearance so it was really nice.
Court didn't tell me where we were headed. She just gave me this and put me in a cab:
The envelope also included five different clues about where I was headed but I'm like, really smart and figured it out with clue number 1: TOPOLOBOMPO! It's Rick Bayless's fancy restaurant here in Chicago (he's also got a more casual one and an even more casual one) and we've been trying to get reservations for two years. Ok, so not actively trying for that long, but for the past two years when our anniversary is approaching, I call and then get turned down (unless we want to eat at 4pm with the Cotton Tops). It's become a nice annual tradition, getting turned down by Bayless. I must have complained at some point to my sister and she must have listened.
Dinner was fantastic and I now have about nine months to come up with a good enough birthday gift for Courtney to call it even. We each had a different five course tasting menu so we could share everything. I wish I had taken more pictures of the dinner, but it was embarrassing enough to bust out my camera and take just these few:
Blood Sausage & Chorizo (and lots of other stuff) to make tacos with
Lobster & Shrimp Soup with Tortilla Foam and Caesar Salad
Tres Leches Cake with Meringue, Cardamom Ice Cream, and Blood Oranges
Some Sort of Coconut Trio
Happy to have left the house!
Thanks Aunt Courtney!
